Satyajit Ray foi um dos melhores e mais conhecidos realizadores de cinema da Índia. Mesmo reconhecido internacionalmente, no começo os seus filmes tiveram uma aceitação restrita na própria Índia por conta de uma particularidade: a decisão em filmar em Bengali, um idioma acessível somente à elite. Em 1977, quando realizou The Chess Players em hindi, a língua predominante no seu país, é que o cineasta ganhou popularidade.

Satyajit Ray soube como ninguém retratar a vida e a alma do povo simples das aldeias e cidades da imensa Índia.
