Tomás de Aquino (1225-1274): cognominado Doctor Communis ou Doctor Angelicus é, certamente, uma das referências maiores do pensamento cristão e ocidental. Commenos de vinte anos entrou na OrdemDominicana. Estudou emNápoles, Colónia e Paris, onde foi «descoberto» por Santo AlbertoMagno, assombrado coma sua inteligência. A alcunha que trazia era a de «boimudo».Dele disse omestre AlbertoMagno: «Quando este boimugir, omundo inteiro ouvirá o seu mugido.»
Tomás de Aquino foi professor na Universidade de Paris, no reinado de Luís IX de França. Morreu, com 49 anos, na Abadia de Fossanova, quando se dirigia para Lião a fim de participar no Concílio, a pedido do Papa.Dante Alighieri discute os contornos da sua morte na Divina Comédia.
