Sam Shepard é autor – galardoado com o prémio Pulitzer – de mais de 55 peças teatrais e de três coletâneas de contos. Enquanto ator, apareceu em mais de 60 filmes, tendo sido nomeado para um Óscar em 1984. Foi finalista do prémio literário W.H. Smith pelo seu livro de contos Great Dream of Heaven. Foi doutor honoris causa do Trinity College, de Dublin, desde 2012. Membro da Academia Americana das Artes e Letras, recebeu, da mesma, a Medalha de Ouro para Drama.
