Safo
Sappho was born in the second half of the 7th century BC on the Greek island of Lesbos. Educated in an aristocratic environment, the fragments of her poetry are a testament to the first female author in European literature and are considered the epitome of lyrical perfection in Antiquity. In her verses, it is possible to glimpse amorous enchantment and suffering, a constant tension between youth and old age, marked by sublime eroticism. According to an ancient myth, she is believed to have died of love for the young Phaon, throwing herself off a rock in Leucas.
