Ruy Duarte de Carvalho nasceu em Santarém, em 1941, mas cresceu no Namibe. Foi poeta, antropólogo, escritor e cineasta. Participou na luta pela libertação de Angola, e tornou-se cidadão deste país a partir do momento em que passou a haver cidadania angolana. Além de ser regente agrícola e criador de ovelhas, estudou cinema em Londres e doutorou-se na Escola de Altos Estudos em Ciências Sociais, em Paris, em Antropologia Social e Etnologia. Publicou Lavra (poesia reunida) e ainda, entre outros, Vou Lá Visitar Pastores, As Paisagens Propícias, Desmedida e A Terceira Metade. Morreu em Swakopmund, em 2010.
