Rosa Montero nasceu em Madrid em 1951. Como jornalista, colabora em exclusivo com o jornal El País, tendo obtido, em 1980, o Prémio Nacional de Jornalismo e, em 2005, o Prémio da Associação de Imprensa de Madrid, por toda a sua vida profissional. Com A Louca da Casa recebeu o Prémio Grinzane Cavour de literatura estrangeira e o Prémio Qué Leer para o melhor livro espanhol, distinção que também foi atribuída, em 2006, a História do Rei Transparente. A Ridícula Ideia de Não Voltar a Ver-te viria a ganhar o Prémio da Crítica de Madrid 2014.
Recebeu, já em 2017, e pelo conjunto da sua obra, o Prémio Nacional das Letras Espanholas, galardão que o júri fundamentou com a «sua longa trajetória no romance, jornalismo e ensaio».
