Romana Petri nasceu em Roma, onde vive. Tradutora, crítica literária, escreve regularmente para várias revistas e jornais italianos entre os quais, L’Unitá e Il Messagero di Roma. É actualmente também editora, responsável pela divulgação da literatura portuguesa em Itália.
Considerada uma das vozes mais representativas da actual escrita italiana, inicia a sua carreira literária em 1990 com Il gambero blu e altri racconti (Prémio Rapallo e Prémio Mondello opera prima). Entre as suas obras mais aclamadas destacam-se Uma Guerra na Umbria - Case Venir, Prémio Rapallo-Carige, finalista Prémio Strega 1998, A Senhora dos Açores, Prémio Grinzane Cavour 2002; e Os Pais dos Outros, Prémio Chiara e Prémio CittàdiBari. Os seus livros estão traduzidos em português, inglês, francês, alemão e neerdlandês.
