Robert B. Laughlin é o Professor de Física Robert M. e Anne Bass da Universidade de Standford, onde ensina desde 1985. Em 1998 partilhou o Prémio Nobel da Física pelo seu trabalho no efeito de Hall fraccionário. É membro da Academia Americana das Artes e das Ciências, membro da Associação Americana para o Avanço da Ciência e membro da Academia Nacional das Ciências. Vive actualmente em Palo Alto, Califórnia.
