Robert A. Heinlein é considerado um dos grandes impulsionadores do género da ficção científica, juntamente com Arthur C. Clarke e Isaac Asimov. É o autor de obras hoje aclamadas como clássicos modernos e que venceram quatro Prémios Hugo. As suas ideias originais, por vezes controversas, tornaram-no uma das grandes referências do género durante décadas e, em 1974, tornou-se o primeiro Grande Mestre dos Escritores de Ficção Científica. Entre as suas obras mais famosas destacam-se The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Starship Troopers e Um Estranho numa Terra Estranha, publicado numa nova edição pela Saída de Emergência.
