Ramalho Ortigão foi escritor e jornalista. Nasceu no Porto, onde foi criado pela avó, e estudou Direito em Coimbra, não tendo, porém, acabado o curso. Foi professor de Eça de Queirós, com quem escreveu um dos primeiros livros policiais da literatura portuguesa. Com Eça também fundou mais tarde As Farpas. Com Antero de Quental bateu-se em duelo, à espada, por causa de uma contenda decorrente da Questão Coimbrã. Figura destacada do século XIX, literário e intelectual português, e, em particular, da Geração de 70, foi um ilustre membro do grupo dos "Vencidos da Vida".
