Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) foi um filósofo, poeta e conferencista norte-americano. Expoente máximo do movimento transcendentalista americano de meados do século XIX, a sua fama em vida foi arrebatadora, congregando multidões nas suas conferências. O seu idealismo transcendental enfatizava a autoconfiança, a cultura pessoal e a expressão individual. Na Europa, foi decisivo para o pensamento de Nietzsche, que recuperou temas como o poder, o destino, a poesia e a história e a crítica do cristianismo.
