Penélope Parker nasceu a 13 de Maio, no Parque Nacional de Moremi (Botsuana), no preciso momento em que o seu pai fotografava um magnífico exemplar de crocodilo do Nilo. Sexta filha de um diplomata canadense e de uma pintora anglo-russa, cresceu entre Madras (Índia), Xangai (China) e o interior da Inglaterra. Participou em escavações arqueológicas, no Iraque e em Caxemira, trabalhou como fotógrafa para diferentes periódicos, deu conferências em várias universidades e escreveu artigos pelos quatro cantos do mundo. É apaixonada pela leitura, viagens e antiguidades russas.
