Jorge Mario Bergoglio nasceu em Buenos Aires, em 1936, numa família de origem italiana, e licenciou-se em Química.
Com 22 anos, iniciou o seu noviciato na Companhia de Jesus, primeiro no Chile e depois em Buenos Aires, onde, em 1963, terminou o curso de Filosofia.
Em 2013 foi eleito Papa da Igreja Católica e Chefe de Estado do Vaticano com o nome de Francisco I, após a abdicação do Papa Bento XVI.
Foi o primeiro papa nascido no continente americano, o primeiro pontífice não europeu em mais de 1200 anos e também o primeiro papa jesuíta da História.
Faleceu a 21 de abril de 2025 na Casa de Santa Marta na Cidade do Vaticano.
