Owen Matthews estudou História Moderna em Oxford, antes de iniciar a sua carreira como jornalista na Bósnia. Escreveu para o Moscow Times, The Times, Spectator e Independent. Em 1997, tornou-se correspondente da revista Newsweek em Moscovo, cobrindo a segunda guerra chechena, da guerra do Afeganistão, do Iraque e do conflito no Leste da Ucrânia. O seu primeiro livro sobre a história da Rússia, Stalin’s Children, foi traduzido para vinte e oito línguas e foi finalista do First Book Award do jornal The Guardian e do Prémio Médicis. O Espião Perfeito foi finalista do Pushkin House Prize.
