Nascida em 1973 numa pequena aldeia no norte do Vietname, Nguyen Phan Qué Mai viveu a devastação da guerra desde muito cedo. Trabalhou como vendedora ambulante e agricultora de arroz antes de ganhar uma bolsa de estudos para estudar numa universidade na Austrália. Autora e poetisa aclamada, ganhou alguns dos mais prestigiados prémios literários do Vietname. É autora de vários livros de ficção e não-ficção, e o seu trabalho foi traduzido e publicado em diversos países. Ganhou inúmeros prémios, incluindo o PEN Oakland/Josephine Miles Literary Award e foi finalista do Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Quando as Montanhas Cantam tornou-se rapidamente um bestseller e está a ser traduzido em todo o mundo.
