Nelson José dos Santos António, nasceu em Portimão, no Algarve, onde aprendeu a vadiar. Doutorado na Alemanha em 1986, pela Schumpeter School of Business and Economics, Bergische Universitat, Wuppertal, viveu e lecionou doze anos na Ásia, entre 1989 e 2001. Publicou na Alemanha, China, Japão, Estados Unidos, Brasil e Portugal. É atualmente professor catedrático no ISCTE-IUL, onde leciona Estratégia, Gestão da Qualidade e Culturas de Negócio Asiáticas. Foi professor visitante em várias Universidades, entre elas, X’ian Jiaotong, Rennes I, Southern Medical (Cantão) e Paris I (Sorbonne).
