Nélson Mateus é o responsável pelo projeto Retratos Contados, um conjunto de atividades e eventos que visam a valorização dos mais velhos e reforçam a importância da ligação intergeracional entre avós e netos. Os livros Diário de Uma Avó e de Um Neto e Viagem às Memórias de Portugal abordam, precisamente, estes temas.
Tem feito a curadoria de exposições de homenagem a personalidades como: Alice Vieira, Ruy de Carvalho, António Sala e Anita Guerreiro, que têm sido itinerantes um pouco por todo o país. Recentemente criou a exposição «Uma Aventura». É ainda mentor da iniciativa «Encontro Avós e Netos».
