Licenciado em Matemática Aplicada pela Universidade de Witwatersrand, em 1984, embarcou numa carreira de exploração mineral que o levou para várias regiões vitivinícolas, que incluíram a Austrália, o Chile, a Califórnia, a Rússia e a Europa, e que contribuíram para o desenvolvimento do seu interesse pelo vinho.

Atualmente Pendock escreve para diversas publicações sul -africanas, bem como para o Sunday Times e o Financial Times, entre outros.
