Mikhail Chichkin nasceu em Moscovo em 1961, onde cursou Inglês e Alemão, tendo-se lançado como escritor em 1993 com a publicação do conto Lição de caligrafia. Foi o único autor a vencer os três maiores prémios literários russos e é candidato russo ao Nobel. Vive desde 1995 em Zurique, na Suíça, onde é um crítico acerbo, com publicações regulares em jornais como The Guardian, do regime de Vladímir Putin.
