Antigo editor da Oxford University Press, Michael Cox foi também biógrafo de M. R. James. A sua longa paixão pela literatura vitoriana levou-o a editar várias coletâneas de ficção desse período, incluindo The Oxford Book of Victorian Ghost Stories (1991) e The Oxford Book of Victorian Detective Stories (1992).
Desde os seus vinte e poucos anos, Michael Cox planeou e esboçou O Sentido da Noite. No ano passado descobriu que uma rara forma de cancro lhe ameaçava a visão. Depois de passar por uma delicada operação que lhe evitou a cegueira, decidiu escrever o romance que estivera no centro da sua imaginação e da sua investigação durante tantos anos.
