Mercè Rodoreda nasceu em 1908, em Barcelona, e faleceu em Girona, em 1983. Entre 1939 e 1957, viveu no exílio, primeiro em França e mais tarde na Suíça. Figura de proa da literatura catalã contemporânea, as suas obras estão traduzidas em mais de trinta línguas e granjearam-lhe inúmeras distinções, entre as quais o Prémio de Honra das Letras Catalãs e o Prémio Cidade de Barcelona. Na sua bibliografia, onde A Praça do Diamante (1962) ocupa um lugar central, destacam-se ainda os romances El carrer de les camèlies (1966), Jardí vora el mar (1967), Espelho Partido (1974) e Quanta, quanta guerra… (1980).
