Maurice Druon nasceu em Paris a 23 de abril de 1918 e morreu em abril de 2009. Licenciado em ciências políticas, durante a II Guerra Mundial, foge, através de Espanha e Portugal, para se juntar às fileiras da Resistência francesa em Londres. Herói da Resistência francesa, cavaleiro do Império Britânico e condecorado com a Grã-Cruz da Legião de Honra Francesa, foi também membro da Academia Francesa e é unanimemente considerado um dos maiores romancistas franceses. Ocupou o cargo de ministro da Cultura em França em 1973 e 1974. Entre os seus muitos e diversos assumidos fãs estão George R. R. Martin, Nicolas Sarkozy e Vladimir Putin.
