Matilde Rosa Araújo

Portuguese writer and educator, full name Matilde Rosa Lopes de Araújo, born in 1921 in Lisbon. Having completed her secondary education with private tutors, she graduated in Romance Philology from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon in 1945. She also had a refined musical training, attending the Higher Course at the Conservatory of the same city.
A personality always linked to writing and teaching, she was a teacher in Technical-Professional Education for many years, also taking charge of teacher training, notably at the Lisbon Primary Teacher Training School and in the field of children's literature. As a citizen, she dedicated herself to children's issues and the defense of their rights.
Having begun her literary career while still at university, Matilde Rosa Araújo contributed extensively to various periodicals over the following decades. Furthermore, her body of work (poetry and narrative) constitutes one of the most significant works of Portuguese literature of all time, both for and about childhood and youth. Among the approximately thirty titles published, works such as [list of titles would go here] deserve special mention for the refined sensitivity they reveal to the experience of childhood. Tila's Book (1957), The Green Clown (1962), Story of a Boy (1963), The Kingdom of the Seven Points (1974), The Old Woman of the Woods (1983) and, from 1994, The Green Fairies and The Ground and the Star.
Matilde Rosa Araújo has received several important awards in the field of children's literature. In 1980, she was awarded the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's Grand Prize for Children's Literature (jointly). In 1991, she won an award in Brazil for best foreign book, given to... The Green Clown by the São Paulo Association of Art Critics. His book of poems The Green Fairies In 1996, it received the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation award for the best children's book published in the two-year period 1994-1995.
The author also published fiction for adults and works that demonstrate her qualities as an educator. She is the author of several volumes on the importance of childhood in literary creation for adults and on the importance of children's and young adult literature in the formation of the child, in the education of poetic feeling as a valuable pedagogical foundation.
In May 2004, she was awarded the Career Prize by the Portuguese Society of Authors.
He passed away on July 6, 2010, at the age of 89, at his home in Lisbon.
