Tendo crescido num bairro turbulento de Detroit (EUA), Marshall B. Rosenberg (1934-2015) interessou-se por novas formas de comunicação para criar alternativas pacíficas de diálogo que amenizassem o clima de violência com o qual conviveu. Comunicação Não-Violenta resulta da sua formação académica em Psicologia Clínica e de vivências pessoais como militante pelos direitos civis, voluntário em abrigos e terapeuta familiar.
