Escritor francês (1740-1814), a sua obra só viria a ser revalorizada no início do século, com Apollinaire e os surrealistas. Em Sade, o Surrealismo descobriu o reivindicador de uma liberdade total face à sociedade. De salientar os romances Cent Vingt Journées de Sodome (Cento e Vinte Dias de Sodoma, 1782-1785), Justine ou les Malheurs de la vertue (Justina ou as Infelicidades da Virtude, 1791), Philosophie dans le Boudoir (1795) e L'Histoire de Juliette et sa sœur (1797), em que às cenas de libertinagem se assimila uma peculiar forma de reflexão filosófica.
