Mario Vargas Llosa
2010 Nobel Prize in Literature
Mario Vargas Llosa (1936-2025) was born in Arequipa, Peru. In 1959 he left his country and, thanks to a scholarship, entered the Complutense University of Madrid, where he completed his doctoral studies, subsequently settling in Paris. Always close to poverty, he worked as a radio announcer, journalist, and Spanish teacher. He returned to Peru in 1964 and married his cousin Patricia the following year, with whom he left for Europe in 1967, living until 1974 in Greece, Paris, London, and Barcelona – after which he returned to Peru. In Lima, he could finally dedicate himself exclusively to literature and journalism, never abandoning political activism. After a presidential candidacy, he settled in London and, in his later years, lived between Paris and Madrid, writing novels and literary essays, traveling the world as a visiting professor at various universities. Among the many awards he received are... Romulo Gallegos (1967), the Prince of Asturias Award (1986) or the Cervantes Prize (1994). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010. He is one of the most important novelists and essayists in Latin America and one of the leading writers of his generation.
