Mariko Tamaki was born in Toronto, Canada. She studied English Literature, worked as a performance artist and is a film director and author of texts for comics (Skim and Emiko Superstar) and also the youth novel (You) Set Me on Fire.

Mariko and Jillian Tamaki don't share the same last name by chance. They are cousins, both descendants of a Japanese family.
