Marie Lu é a diretora artística da Online Alchemy, uma empresa de videojogos, e também detém a marca infantil Fuzz Academy. Certa tarde, a assistir a Os Miseráveis, perguntou-se como seria a relação entre um delinquente famoso e um detetive prodigioso numa história mais moderna e sentiu-se inspirada a escrever Legend. Licenciada pela University of Southern California em 2006, vive em Los Angeles, onde passa muito tempo em filas de trânsito.
