Maria Stepánova nasceu em junho de 1972 em Moscovo. É poeta e romancista, tendo dirigido a revista online Openspace.ru, especializada em arte e cultura. Em 2005, recebeu o prestigiado prémio de poesia Andrei Bely. Memória da Memória obteve, em 2017, o prémio Big Book e, em 2021, integrou a shortlist do International Booker Prize. A sua obra está traduzida em mais de uma dezena de línguas, incluindo inglês, francês, alemão, castelhano, italiano, hebraico e finlandês. O The Guardian previu que ela seria o «próximo grande escritor da Rússia».
