Maria Roma é o pseudónimo de Maria José Salgado Sarmento de Matos Freitas do Amaral. É viúva, tem quatro filhos e seis netos. Vive em Lisboa. Licenciada em Filosofia pela Universidade Clássica de Lisboa, colaborou, na década de 1980, com o Diário de Notícias, escrevendo artigos para a secção de Cultura. Mais tarde, colaborou com a revista Máxima, tendo participado na respetiva produção.
Escreveu os seguintes romances: Sorri, Francisca (1990), Tandim (1992), Primadona (1994), A Luz do Rio (1996), De Uma Vez por Todas (2001), Nunca É Demais (2003), Até Um Dia (2005), Espero-te no Sol, Nina (2008), À Sombra da Mesquita (2014) e Nada é por Acaso (2018). Publicou ainda um primeiro livro destinado a um público juvenil: D. Afonso Henriques, Meu Pai (2011), relato da Rainha de Flandres, Teresa de Portugal, sua filha. Com ilustrações de José Emídio.
