Maria João da Câmara é doutorada em História pela Universidade Nova de Lisboa – Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas. Autora de vários trabalhos científicos na área da História e dos Arquivos de Família, além dos romances Um Príncipe Quase Perfeito, Crónica de Amor e Mar, O Pecado e a Honra e Memórias Perdidas de Catarina de Bragança, publicou os ensaios Orey: Uma Família, Uma Empresa e Cristo Rei, Espiritualidade e História. São ainda da sua autoria as seguintes biografias: Pedro de Figueiredo (1657 1722) – Uma Biografia; João Branco Núncio (1901 1976) e Maria José Nogueira Pinto, Uma Vida Invulgar.
