Marcelo Viana nasceu em 1962, no Rio de Janeiro, filho de imigrantes portugueses que logo voltaram para o seu país, onde ele cresceu. Regressou ao Brasil para fazer o doutoramento no Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (Impa), instituição da qual é investigador titular e diretor-geral. Especialista na área de sistemas dinâmicos, já orientou 41 doutores e 22 mestres. Foi presidente da Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática (SBM), vice-presidente da União Matemática Internacional (IMU) e recebeu diversas distinções académicas pelo seu trabalho. Foi condecorado pela Presidência da República do Brasil com a grã-cruz da Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico e a comenda da Ordem Nacional do Mérito Educacional. É membro das Academias de Ciências do Brasil, do Chile, de Portugal e da Academia de Ciências para o Mundo em Desenvolvimento. Escreve semanalmente na Folha de S. Paulo. Com os filhos, Miguel e Anita, redescobre a matemática a cada dia.
