Nascido em 1938, em Lisboa, Marcello Duarte Mathias, foi diplomata de 1970 a 2003. Para além das funções que exerceu no Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros, quando em Lisboa de 1983 a 1991, entre outras, porta-voz do Governo durante a primeira guerra do Golfo (1991), esteve colocado sucessivamente em Brasília, Bruxelas, Nova Iorque, Nova Delhi, Buenos-Aires, encerrando a sua carreira como embaixador na UNESCO, em Paris. Paralelamente é autor de obras de índole diversa entre ficção, crónica e ensaio (A Felicidade em Albert Camus e A Memória dos Outros I e II), com destaque para a diarística sob a designação genérica de No Devagar Depressa dos Tempos, de que é reflexo a antologia. Casado com Anne-Marie Vaultier, vive na Abuxarda em Cascais. Têm dois filhos, Nuno e Marcelo, ambos diplomatas.
