Antes de se tornar escritor, foi jornalista, cronista e um estudioso do argot medieval, das tradições orientais e das literaturas antigas anglo-saxónicas. Dedicou-se à crítica, à teoria literária e traduziu e divulgou em França vários autores de relevo.
