Manuela Ferreira começou por ser educadora de infância, sendo atualmente docente na Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação da Universidade do Porto. Tem feito investigação na área da Sociologia da Infância. Defendeu em 2002 a sua tese de doutoramento, A gente aqui o que gosta mais é de brincar com os outros meninos!, sob a orientação do Professor Steve Stoer, já editada no essencial, em forma de livro.
