Manuel de Jesus Antunes was born on July 20, 1948, in Memória, Leiria. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Lourenço Marques in 1972, holds a master's degree in Medicine and a doctorate in Philosophy and Science from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He is a tenured professor at the University of Coimbra. He is the author of the books... Mitral Valve Repair and The Disease of HealthHe has received more than 20 national and international awards, prizes and decorations, including three Portuguese honorary orders. He has personal surgical experience of more than 35,000 open-heart surgeries and 350 heart transplants.
