Manuel da Fonseca nasceu em Santiago do Cacém, em outubro de 1911. Poeta, romancista, contista e cronista, foi uma das figuras centrais do movimento neorrealista. A sua obra poética, o livro de contos O Fogo e as Cinzas e os romances Cerromaior e Seara de Vento destacam-se numa produção literária que teve sempre o Alentejo como pano de fundo. Faleceu a 11 de março de 1993, aos 81 anos.
