Manuel Clemente nasceu em Torres Vedras a 16 de julho de 1948. É licenciado em História e Teologia e doutorado em Teologia Histórica. Em1975 começou a lecionar na Universidade Católica Portuguesa, tornando-se depois diretor do Centro de Estudos de História Religiosa dessa instituição. Em junho de 1979 foi ordenado presbítero; vinte anos depois, em novembro de 1999, foi nomeado Bispo Auxiliar de Lisboa, com o título de Pinhel, e em janeiro de 2000, ordenado na Igreja de Santa Maria de Belém (Jerónimos). Em 2007, o Vaticano nomeou-o Bispo do Porto. Publicou na Assírio & Alvim Portugal e os Portugueses e 1810-1910-2010—Datas e Desafios.
