Manuel Braga da Cruz nasceu em Tadim (Braga) em 1946. Licenciado em Filosofia (Braga 1968) e em Sociologia (Roma 1973), doutorado e agregado em Sociologia Política (Lisboa, 1987 e 1992). Investigador no Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa (1982-2000), onde dirigiu a revista Análise Social (1987-1998). Professor catedrático na Universidade Católica Portuguesa, da qual foi Reitor entre 2000 e 2012. Membro da Sociedade Científica da Universidade Católica Portuguesa, da Academia Portuguesa da História, da Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, da Academia de Marinha. Foi fundador e presidente da Associação Portuguesa de Ciência Política. Sócio correspondente da Real Academia de la Historia de España e da Real Academia de Ciências Morales y Politicas de Madrid.
