Mafalda Soares da Cunha é professora de História Moderna na Universidade de Évora. É coordenadora desde 2018 do projeto europeu RESISTANCE: Rebellion and Resistance in the Iberian Empires, 16th-19th centuries. Os seus trabalhos centram-se na história social e institucional de Portugal e do seu império na época moderna, sobre os quais publicou numerosos textos. Entre os seus livros destaca-se A Casa de Bragança (1560-1640). Práticas Senhoriais e Redes Clientelares (Lisboa, 2000) ou a coautoria, com Leonor Freire Costa, de D. João IV, 1604-1656 (Lisboa, 2008).
