Formado em Harvard e Case Western Reserve, ocupou cargos administrativos no governo americano e fez clínica privada de psiquiatria.
Recentemente, dedica muito do seu tempo e dos seus recursos financeiros a trabalhar na Foundation for Community Encouragement, uma organização sem fins lucrativos que ajudou a fundar com a sua mulher, Lily, em 1984. Vive no estado de Connecticut.
