Luísa Costa Gomes
Luísa Costa Gomes was born in Lisbon in 1954. She graduated in Philosophy, was a secondary school teacher and directed FICÇÕES (short story magazine). She is the author of novels, short stories, chronicles and plays, including Never Anything from Nobody, the libretto of the opera Corvo Branco, The Last to Laugh, Imperfect Actor, etc.
His first novel, O Pequeno Mundo, won the D. Diniz Prize from Casa de Mateus and Olhos Verdes, the Máxima Prize for Literature. The work Tales Again won the Grand Prize for Short Story of the Portuguese Association of Writers. He also published, at Dom Quixote, the children's books A Galinha Que Cantava Ópera (2005), with illustrations by Pierre Pratt, and Tongue Twisters (2006), with illustrations by Jorge Nesbitt, A Pirata (2006), a novel about the adventurous life of the pirate Mary Read, and the book September and Other Tales (2007).
His novel Illusion (or whatever they want) (2009) received, in 2010, the Fernando Namora/Estoril Sol Literary Prize, «for innovation and agile stylistic register», as the jury said in the minutes, and the PEN Club Fiction Prize, ex aequo with Dulce Maria Cardoso.
Cláudio e Constantino (2014) won the dst Grand Prize for Literature and Florinhas de Soror Nada, the Life of a Non-Saint (2018), the Tavares Rodrigues Novel and Urban Novel Prize. To Distance (Thirteen Tales about Water) (2021) was distinguished with the Casino da Póvoa/Correntes d'Escritas Literary Prize 2022.
Visiting Friends and Other Tales (2024) is his most recent fiction book.
