Lionel Davidson nasceu em 1922 em Inglaterra, filho de emigrantes judeus. Foi jornalista freelance e percorreu o mundo. The Night of Wenceslau o seu primeiro romance foi aclamado pelo público e conquistou o mais importante prémio britânico de thrillers. O autor viria a ser distinguido com o mesmo galardão em 1966 e em 1978. A sua obra suscitou elogios rasgados de Graham Greene, Daphne du Maurier, Peter Hitchens ou Ruth Rendell. Em 1994, depois de 16 anos sem escrever, publicou a sua obra-prima: O Espião da Sibéria. Recentemente reeditado, voltou às listas dos livros mais vendidos. O autor recebeu em 2001 o Cartier Diamond Dagger pela sua carreira.
