Leonardo Sciascia, nascido em Racalmuto, na Sicília, em 1921, ficou na história como um dos mais importantes autores italianos do século XX. Os seus romances são claramente marcados pelo ambiente de corrupção política e convulsões sociais que assolaram a Itália daqueles anos e constituem, no seu conjunto, uma fina e acutilante crítica de época. Além da escrita, Leonardo Sciascia havia também de pisar a arena política, no Parlamento Italiano e no Europeu, após ter sido Conselheiro Municipal de Palermo. Depois da sua morte, em 1989, O Dia da Coruja, o seu mais importante livro, encontrou novas gerações de leitores, sendo hoje o romance mais lido do autor em Itália, logo seguido de Uma História Simples, ambos publicados em Portugal pela Presença.
