Lao Zi terá nascido nos começos do século VI a.C. na China. Filho de pais pobres, foi-lhe posto o nome de Li-Peh-Yang. Contemporâneo de Confúcio, ter-se-á encontrado com este no ano 518 a.C. Pouco se sabe acerca dos seus primeiros anos salvo que foi zelador do Arquivo Real da cidade de Lo-Yang, cargo que exerceu durante muitos anos. Graças ao trabalho na Biblioteca Imperial pôde estudar muito e adquirir grandes conhecimentos. Logo que começou a emitir opiniões sobre filosofia e religião, conquistou o respeito e admiração de muita gente que começou a chamar-lhe Lao Tsé (Mestre Lao).
