Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão foi Presidente de Timor-Leste de 2002 a 2007. Após deixar a Presidência foi eleito Presidente do partido político o CNRT - Congresso Nacional para a Reconstrução de Timor-Leste. Nas eleições legislativas seguintes, o CNRT formou uma aliança com três outros partidos políticos, o PD (Partido Democrático) e a Coligação ASDT-PSD, tendo essa aliança passado a chamar-se AMP (Aliança da Maioria Parlamentar). Em agosto de 2007, o Presidente da República, Dr. José Ramos-Horta convidou oficialmente a AMP a formar o próximo Governo, com Xanana Gusmão como o Primeiro-Ministro. Atualmente desempenha as funções de Primeiro-Ministro e Ministro da Defesa e Segurança da República Democrática de Timor-Leste.
