Kathryn Stockett foi catapultada para a fama com o seu romance de estreia, As Serviçais, sobre a segregação racial na América sulista da década de sessenta. Nos EUA já é considerada a obra literária de maior sucesso dos últimos anos. Natural do Mississípi, a autora formou-se na Universidade do Alabama e vive atualmente em Atlanta, após ter trabalhado durante alguns anos em Nova Iorque, em edição de revistas.
