Karen Blixen nasceu em Rungsted, na Dinamarca, em 1885, e morreu em 1962. Em 1914 partiu para o Quénia com o marido onde se fixaram para gerir uma plantação de café. Depois de se divorciar, Karen Blixen permaneceu no Quénia, só regressando à Dinamarca em 1931, em virtude do colapso do mercado de café.
Karen Blixen estreou-se na literatura com Sete Contos Góticos, escrito sob o pseudónimo Isak Dinesen, mas viria a destacar-se com o livro África Minha, publicado pela primeira vez em 1954, sobre o período que passou no Quénia.
