Jumpei Azumi nasceu em 1958, em Tóquio, mas devido a problemas de saúde mudou-se com a sua família para diversas partes do Japão. Só se estreou como autor em 2004 e foi o precursor do género literário de histórias de terror nas montanhas. Os seus contos são geralmente baseados em experiências reais que ouve ao visitar as montanhas. É frequentemente convidado como comentador em programas de variedades.
