Joseph LeDoux nasceu em 1949 na Luisiana (EUA). É professor da cátedra Henry and Lucy Moses de Ciência e de Ciência Neural, Psicologia, Psiquiatria e Psiquiatria Infantil e Juvenil na Universidade de Nova Iorque. Dirige o Emotional Brain Institute desta universidade e o Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research, é vice-diretor do Max Planck-NYU Center for Language, Music, and Emotion e membro da National Academy of Sciences dos EUA. Autor dos livros Anxious, Synaptic Self e The Emotional Brain, entre outros, é também cantor e compositor na banda de folk-rock The Amygdaloids, e no duo acústico So We Are.
